(Foeniculum vulgare)


It is the tiny seeds of fennel that are the most potent and medicinal. These have been used for thousands of years to treat colic and to increase lactation in nursing mothers.

Fennel has many uses and the root is also eaten as a vegetable. The powdered form of the plant may also be used as a flea powder. This herb may help digestion, rid the body of gas and bloating and can be used externally for the eyes, as well as having many other uses.

How It May Benefit You...

Take internally for:

  • digestive problems, gas, diarrhoea.

  • insufficient milk in nursing mothers.

  • appetite suppressant

  • aids the proper functioning of the kidneys, liver and spleen

  • respiratory infections

  • reputed to be beneficial for chemotherapy patients.

Apply externally for:

  • muscle pain and rheumatism.

  • conjunctivitis.


Fennel oil, used for inflamed joints, may cause a rash. Stop using the herb if this occurs.

Do not consume the oil; it can cause nausea, vomiting, and seizures. Call your doctor immediately.

Do not use fennel if you are pregnant or if you can't use birth-control pills.

Do not take fennel if you have a history of alcoholism, hepatitis, liver disease, abnormal blood clotting.
